BI & Analytics Engineering

I build the data behind better decisions.

Ethan Fleming · Senior Data Analyst · Twin Falls, Idaho

From the pipeline and the dimensional model to the report on someone's screen, I own BI end to end. The projects I enjoy most are the ones that make a measurable difference: hours handed back, calls that never needed to happen, and decisions made with data instead of instinct.

  1. 01

    Understand the decision

Every project starts with the question someone needs answered and the decision it feeds. Then I work backwards to the data.

  2. 02

    Model the data

Clean, tested dimensional models in dbt and SQL, so every report draws on one trusted source of truth.

  3. 03

    Ship it and enable people

Reports and automations people actually use, plus the training that lets them answer the next question themselves.

F1 Analysis dashboard: season overview with championship leaders and points progression by driver

Data engineering · Analytics

F1 Analysis Platform

A full analytics stack on every Formula 1 session since 2023. A Python pipeline loads the OpenF1 API into DuckDB, dbt models it into a tested medallion architecture, and a dashboard publishes 130+ pages of race analysis, from fuel-corrected tyre wear to who left the most time on the table in qualifying.

Work

Two projects from my current role as the sole analytics developer on a three-person data team at a direct-to-consumer healthcare company. Details stay general; the outcomes are real.

Data integration · Azure Functions · Webhooks

Real-time order tracking for members

Problem
Customer service was overwhelmed with order-status questions, and members had no way to see where their order was without calling in.
What I built
I led the move from a scheduled REST API pull to real-time FedEx webhooks: scoping, environment setup and building an Azure Function App that records every tracking event in the data warehouse and pushes it into our ERP and CRM as it happens.
Result
Members get live order updates and can serve themselves, which relieved 15% of all inbound call volume for customer-facing teams.
  1. FedExShipment events, pushed by webhook
  2. Azure Function AppValidates and routes each event
  3. Data warehouseOrder history and analytics
    ERP & CRMLive order status
  4. MembersReal-time updates and self-service
Before: a scheduled API pull, so data was always behind. After: every event is pushed the moment it happens.

Analytics engineering · Microsoft Fabric · dbt · Power BI

A self-service analytics platform

Problem
Decisions were waiting on data. Ad-hoc requests arrived daily and report turnaround was slow, so many decisions were made without data behind them.
What I built
I helped build a central warehouse on Microsoft Fabric, turning business logic into a Kimball dimensional model with dbt and SQL. On top of it I designed and shipped 95%+ of the company's Power BI portfolio, and ran the Power BI and AI enablement programs that taught people to use it.
Result
Stakeholders get their data the moment they need it: 20+ hours of manual reporting eliminated every week, fewer ad-hoc requests, and measurably more self-service reporting.
  1. Source systemsERP, CRM, logistics
  2. dbtTransforms raw data into facts and dimensions
  3. Microsoft FabricCentral warehouse serving the model
  4. Power BISemantic models and 13+ reports
  5. StakeholdersSelf-service answers, same day
One modelled source of truth feeds every report, so a number means the same thing everywhere it appears.

About

From the ambulance to analytics

I started my career as an Advanced EMT in Wyoming. On an ambulance you make fast, high-stakes decisions from incomplete information, and you document everything precisely because the next person depends on it. I also kept the service's inventory system running, tracking usage and forecasting supply orders, which turned out to be my first analytics project.

From there I moved into healthcare sales as a hearing consultant, where I built my first Tableau dashboards and realised the data was the part of the job I loved.

That still shapes how I work. The people using my reports are making decisions with whatever is in front of them, so my job is to make sure it's the right data, that they can trust it, and that it arrives before the decision does.

Today I own the BI stack end to end, from source-system integrations to the reports people open every morning, and I'm growing deeper into analytics engineering: dbt, testing, and treating data like software.
